This is a strategic planning call for your self-directed defined benefit plan. Self-directed pensions need to be carefully monitored so that they do not become over-funded. Performance should be monitored annually at a minimum. Ideally, book an hour for an annual review of your Self-directed DB Plan. This conversation will pick up where your Adminstrator leaves off. Your Pension Administrator assumes that you know how to administer your self-directed defined benefit plan. Their role is purely administrative. It is to file the required forms with the IRS and work with the actuary determining values and contributions.
My role is to bridge the gap between their world and yours. The risk of a self-directed defined benefit plan is the plan becoming over-funded. We should meet annually at the very least to discuss your plan, its funding, and its performance in order for you to take action and keep the plan on track.
